Advanced Studies in England

Semester/Full Year Program

ASESemester

Come and study for a fifteen-week semester, or two-semester 'full year' in the beautiful World Heritage City of Bath, 90 minutes west of London.

We offer courses in a wide range of liberal arts subjects, in particular creative writing, English literature and history. Through strong connections with University College Oxford and other institutions we can also offer a 'bespoke', tailor-made tutorial in almost any subject not based in a laboratory.

Students take four courses, taught over twelve weeks by UK professors in small seminar group (maximum of 13 students) or one-on-one, Oxford-style tutorials. We also have a very strong internship program, with opportunities to work in local organisations such as the Roman Baths Museum, Bath Preservation Trust, 44AD Art Space and Gallery, Suited and Booted independent Filmmakers, M Shed Museum, the Natural Theatre Company, The Jane Austen Centre, and many others. We also run a successful education program, incorporating a classroom placement in a local school.

Students are housed in historic townhouses throughout the city center, within easy walking distance of the Roman Baths, the Abbey, galleries, museums, and an array of pubs and restaurants, theatres and music venues.

The program includes a week-long residential at University College, Oxford, and a three-day stay in Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of playwright and poet, William Shakespeare. The program also offers extensive opportunities for extra-curricular integration with British students (Bath has two universities) and the local community.

Mental Health & Wellness Resources

To ensure a successful study abroad experience, it is important to research the mental health and wellness resources provided by the study abroad program to determine if they offer appropriate support for your particular needs.

ASE has always made the health, well-being, and safety of students a top priority.  As a small, personable organization with a typical staff-to-student ratio of approximately 1:6, they are well-placed to monitor and adapt to the individual health and welfare needs of the students. Regular health and welfare and travel safety updates are sent to students throughout their time at ASE.

Pre-Arrival Information:  Before arrival, all students enrolled in ASE Bath are encouraged to share with ASE any health and welfare circumstances they feel may have an impact on their time abroad. This includes current and historical medical issues, prescriptions, mobility issues, mental health concerns, and any educational accommodations they may wish to request.

Mentoring and Professional Counselling:  Each student is assigned a member of the ASE staff to act as their personal mentor throughout their time on the program. All staff have an office in Nelson House and are readily contactable via email and Google Meet. Students can speak with their mentor, or with any member of staff, in confidence about any matter that concerns them.

Deputy Dean, Dr Lucy Marten, acts as Safeguarding Mentor; and Kara Chambers-Grant, ASE’s Administrative Manager, is their dedicated Rainbow Mentor.  In addition, ASE works closely with a local professional counseling service, with whom all students are entitled to up to six individual sessions at no additional cost.

Health Care and Insurance: ASE students are also covered by a CHUBB medical insurance policy, provided by Franklin and Marshall College. The insurance covers hospital stays and treatments made necessary by an injury or other event (including mental health issues) that arise and are treated during the program. Costs must be authorized for reimbursement. Preventive care is not covered by the CHUBB policy.  (Please note that students are advised to retain or obtain medical insurance in their home country if they need further hospitalization or treatment after leaving the UK.)

ASE Bath encourages students to contact them with any questions or concerns regarding health and safety measures and is willing to help students make appointments with a local healthcare provider if needed.
